Head Lice Prevention this Summer
Head lice treatment has certainly changed. The traditional harsh chemical products have been replaced by safer, all natural products that are easier on your family and more pleasant to use. Still, the best option is not needing treatment at all. Learn the basics of head lice prevention and keep your family free from the little pests.
- Teach your children how head lice are spread, and tell them to avoid things like sharing hats, pillows, hair accessories and other personal items. Just this tip alone will go a long way toward keeping your family lice-free.
- Talk to your children’s coaches, and urge them to use head lice prevention spray on their sporting equipment, dance costumes and other items that might be shared with other children. These shared spaces are a perfect breeding ground for head lice, and prevention starts with awareness.
- Sending the kids to camp? Talk to the camp staff ahead of time about their head lice prevention program. Many camps have programs already in place to screen incoming campers, treat camp bedding and mattresses, and quickly handle any outbreaks. Know their policies before you go, and send along a head lice prevention spray for your children to use. They can spray their own pillows, bedding, caps and clothing. The smell is fresh and discreet, and they’ll sleep better knowing those little critters aren’t coming along for a ride.
- Talk to your school’s health administrator. Ask what their policy is about head lice, and what kind of screening they do. Ask them what you can do at home to check for lice, and how they want it reported. Good head lice prevention is a group effort between schools and parents, so odds are they will welcome your interest. Share what you learn through the PTO or other parent groups, and encourage good head lice prevention in your community.
If someone you know does become infested, be compassionate. Head lice can happen to anyone, especially busy families with children. Be understanding, and also be aware that with proper treatment, head lice can be eradicated in just a few days. There is no need to isolate your children’s friends once they are properly treated.
If you are having a group of kids over at your house, you can teach a little head lice prevention to them too. Remind kids at the slumber party not to share pillows, and make sure they aren’t sharing combs, brushes and hair accessories. A little head lice prevention can go a long way!
