Signs that your Child May Need Head Lice Treatment

Head lice can be a real pain to deal with. If you let an infestation go undetected for too long, you may find yourself constantly giving various head lice treatments to your child for weeks, or even months, to come. This is why catching lice at the beginning of the infestation and getting rid of them quickly is very important. Here are some signs that your child may have lice, and that  immediate head lice treatment is in order.

Scratching the scalp and areas around the scalp  such as the nape of the neck and behind the ears, is one of the biggest signs that your child may need head lice treatment. Head lice feed off the blood of their host. Just like a mosquito bite, a louse bite will form a raised, itchy bump that your child will most likely scratch constantly. The more scratching there is, the more lice are likely to be present and the stronger the head lice treatment will need to be.

Any signs of nits are also early indications that your child needs head lice treatment. Nits are the eggs of lice that will soon hatch and become adult lice. Left untreated, these adult lice will begin feeding off your child. Nits are usually brown or tan in color before they hatch and white afterwards. Either way, they stay attached to the hair shaft with a glue-like substance and can’t easily be brushed away like dandruff. It’s extremely important to begin head lice treatment at the first sign of nits.

Of course, while you’re looking for nits, it’s also just as important to look for adult lice. Adult lice are not attached to hair, instead they will wander and crawl through it. They are also generally brown in color. When adult lice are found, it’s important that they are killed immediately by placing them in alcohol. During the entire time that adult lice are present in the hair and on the scalp, head lice treatments are a must in order to get rid of the problem!

Finding and trying different head lice treatments can be a real headache. To make sure you don’t have to do it any longer than you need to, always watch your child for signs of head lice. This way, if spotted, you can begin head lice treatments right away.
